Itinerary

Early in the morning you will leave Cusco on our bus and travel to Huancarani where we will have breakfast (not included). Then we will continue visiting the funerary tower of Ninamarca. Then we will continue to Paucartambo. Here, we will have a small city tour to discover this charming colonial town, famous for its folkloric traditions. Once in Acjanaco (3560 m), the entrance to the Manu National Park, our guide will explain everything about the Reserve, including rules and characteristics. From this point, we will begin to descend through the Cloud Forest, an incredible ecosystem where we will admire many orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns. In addition, we will observe various types of birds such as the variable hawk, many types of flycatchers, crested orioles and, with luck, monkeys, the Amazonian umbrella bird and some quetzals. On the way we will also make a stop to observe the beautiful Gallito de las Rocas, the national bird of Peru. We will spend our first night at the Bamboo Lodge.

After a delicious breakfast we will leave the lodge and continue our trip to Puerto Atalaya. On the way, we will make a stop. We will have to observe the flora and fauna. We will also stop at some local plantations to observe and learn more about the agricultural products of the jungle such as coca, cassava and different types of tropical fruits. In Atalaya, we will take our boat down the Alto Madre de Dios River, one of the tributaries of the mighty Amazon River. During our day we will have the opportunity to see many types of colorful birds such as parrots, orioles, vultures and other species. Then we will continue visiting one of the lakes overlooking the Alto Madre de Dios River, where we can travel in small traditional rafts. Our goal is to arrive at our lodge in the afternoon. Here, there will be showers and services available. . We will do a night walk that is the best time to see many anthropoids, tarantulas, scorpions and snakes. This is of course optional.

We leave the lodge very early and continue our journey downriver (Alto Madre de Dios River) to enter the Manu River Reserve Zone. Our first stop there is a national park checkpoint (Puesto de Vigilancia Limonal). Halfway to the Casa Matchiguenka hostel we make a first short walk in the Reserve Zone. Throughout the boat trip we will observe many different types of animals such as capybaras, peccaries, monkeys, many birds and alligators, maybe even a jaguar. Late in the afternoon we arrive at Casa Matchiguenka Lodge where we will spend the night. (Optional night walk there).

After breakfast we will spend the morning at Cocha Salvador Lake. You'll spend part of your time canoeing across the lake using a catamaran to observe animal life from the water. We may come across an Agami heron or a Sungrebe and the brown capuchin monkeys usually feed on nearby fruits. The specially built docks that jut out into the lake allow us to search for a family of giant otters that live here. These, the world's largest freshwater carnivores, remain common only on Manu, having been hunted to extinction throughout most of their former range. Each animal consumes between 4 and 5 kilos of fish a day and can often be seen eating large fish on logs at the lake shore. The rest of the day will be spent walking the trails in the area in search of some of the 13 species of monkeys found in the forest here. Your guide will explain some of the basics of rainforest ecosystems and point out some of the area's medicinal plants used by local indigenous groups. It is possible that we come across a group of peccaries, a species of wild boar that is found here. During the afternoon we enjoyed the sunset. Night at Casa Matsiguenka.

Luego regresaremos a nuestro albergue. Paseo nocturno opcional.

Today we have one more opportunity to explore the forest around the lodge; we might even get a chance to see a group of Tamarine monkeys, which are the smallest monkeys in the entire world. Be careful of the surroundings, because they could sneak up behind you! Later, after lunch, we will take the boat and travel for four hours down the Manu River to our lodge, on the way we might see some black caimans lying on the beach receiving the heat from the sun, maybe we can see the great, South American feline, the jaguar, which may be basking in the sun somewhere along the river. In the evening, we will visit another trail system with a completely different set of features than the first.

Once again we got up early, enjoyed walking around the lodge and then packed up and slowly made our way up the river. We continue to our next lodge, to get there, we will make a stop at a beautiful hot springs place, where we will spend some time relaxing and swimming. Located a short distance from the Alto Madre de Dios rivers. from here we continue to Puerto Atalaya, where we will take a car and drive for 40 minutes to Bambu Lodge and spend one more night in this magical Amazon jungle.

This day is very sad that we have to leave our wonderful forest full of mysteries and return by bus to Cusco. We then have breakfast and then continue through the cloud forest, with a few more bird-watching opportunities. Then we travel back to the Andes to return to Cusco in the afternoon.
