Manu Road Birdwatching Tour 7D/6N

Early in the morning, we will have breakfast and pack our belongings before continuing our journey to Cock of the Rock Lodge. Along the way, we will make several stops to observe cloud forest bird species such as the Red-and-white Antpitta, Inca Flycatcher, Marcapata Spinetail, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, Barred Becard, Chestnut-crested Becard, Hanson's Flycatcher, Blue-and-black Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Capped Conebill, Andean Solitaire, Montane Woodcreeper, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Superciliaris Hemispingus, Unadorned Flycatcher, Black-streaked Puffbird, White-eared Solitaire, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, and Solitary Eagle, among other species. Upon arrival at the lodge, we will settle into our rooms and enjoy lunch. Afterwards, we will have the opportunity to observe hummingbirds in the gardens and at the feeders, where species may include the Violet-fronted Brilliant, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Speckled Hummingbird, Wire-crested Thorntail, Green Hermit, Peruvian Piedtail, Geoffroy's Daggerbill, and Booted Racket-tail. We will also visit the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where males perform courtship displays to attract females. Weather and viewing conditions permitting, we will observe this fascinating behavior and photograph these birds. Other species that may be seen include the Crested Quetzal, Spotted Barbtail, Black-eared Hemispingus, Golden Tanager, Orange-eared Tanager, Blue-necked Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Yellow-throated Chlorospingus, Dusky Green Oropendola, Montane Foliage Gleaner, and Olive Flycatcher. After the activities, we will return to the lodge for coffee and some time to relax. In the afternoon, we will have another opportunity to observe birds around the lodge, including the Lyre-tailed Nightjar and Rufescent Screech Owl. Finally, we will return to the lodge for dinner.

Early in the morning, we will have breakfast at the lodge before heading out at around 5:00 a.m. in our vehicle for a birdwatching excursion along nearby trails. During the walk, we will look for a variety of bird species, including the Yellow-rumped Antwren, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Peruvian Piedtail, Slaty Gnateater, Slate Antwren, Lanceolated Monklet, Paradise Tanager, Golden Tanager, and White-winged Tanager. After the morning excursion, we will return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax. In the afternoon, we will head out again for another walk along the route, searching for additional species and looking for birds we may have missed earlier. Possible sightings include the Golden-olive Woodpecker, Versicolored Barbet, Slaty-capped Flycatcher, Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant, Black-billed Treehunter, and Solitary Eagle, among others. After the activities, we will return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Early in the morning, we’ll have breakfast at the lodge and pack our bags to continue our adventure. Along the way, we’ll make several stops to observe species we haven’t yet recorded, such as the Olive Finch, Orange Flycatcher, Lanceolated Monklet, Crested Quetzal, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Black-goggled Tanager, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Bay-headed Tanager, Blue Dacnis, Masked Trogon, Yellow-rumped Antwren, and other bird species, including flycatchers and tanagers. We’ll continue our journey to Bio Manu Lodge, passing through the small villages of Patria and Pillcopata, before arriving at our lodge for lunch. Upon arrival, we’ll settle in and have time to rest. In the afternoon, we’ll take a hike along the forest trails, where we’ll be able to observe species such as the Bamboo Antshrike, Manu Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Goeldi’s Antbird, White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, White-browed Antbird, Ornate Stipplethroat, and Chestnut-tailed Antbird. We may also spot tanagers, flycatchers, swallows, jays, and other birds native to the area. At the end of the hike, we’ll return to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, we can take an optional night walk to look for nocturnal species such as the Black-banded Owl, Tropical Screech Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl, Collared Potoo, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, and Common Pauraque.

After breakfast, we’ll drive to Salvación—a trip of about 40 minutes. Once there, we’ll take a 30-minute walk to Cocha Machuwasi (lagoon), where we’ll observe various bird species in the surrounding area. Notable among them are the Hoatzin, Pale-eyed Blackbird, Rufous-sided Crake, Blackish Rail, Horned Screamer, Orange-backed Troupial, Red-capped Cardinal, Black-capped Donacobius, Limpkin, Scarlet Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Lesser Kiskadee, Green Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, and Lemon-throated Barbet. After this activity, we’ll visit the Inka Amazonia Hummingbird Garden, an excellent spot for observing and photographing these small birds. Here we’ll find species such as the Gould’s Jewelfront, Rufous-crested Coquette, Black-bellied Thorntail, Wire-crested Thorntail, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Starthroat, Amethyst Woodstar, Koepcke’s Hermit, Great-billed Hermit, White-browed Hermit, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, White-necked Jacobin, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, and Violet-headed Hummingbird, among others. At the end of the visit, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch and some downtime. In the afternoon, we’ll visit another hummingbird observation garden, where we’ll also be able to observe and photograph various species, such as the White-browed Hermit, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Blue-tailed Emerald, Amazonian Antpitta, Rufous-sided Crake, King Vulture, Fine-barred Piculet, Yellow-billed Nunbird, and Blue-headed Macaw. Once the activities are over, we’ll return to Bio Manu Lodge for dinner. In the evening, those who wish may participate in an optional outing to observe owls and other nocturnal birds.

During the walk, we may encounter the Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Plain Softtail, Butterfly Coquette, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Fine-barred Piculet, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Pheasant Cuckoo, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Little Cuckoo, Cabani's Spinetail, Black-capped Tinamou, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Band-tailed Manakin, Large-headed Flatbill, Black Hawk-Eagle, Buckley's Forest Falcon, Black-throated Antbird, Riparian Antbird, Fiery-capped Manakin, Plain Brown Woodcreeper, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Peruvian Recurvebill, White-lored Tyrannulet, Lineated Woodpecker, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Blue-throated Piping Guan, White-throated Toucan, Amazonian Emerald Toucanet, and Chestnut-eared Aracari, among many others. Around midday, we will return to the lodge to freshen up and enjoy lunch. Afterwards, we will pack our belongings and begin the journey to Cock of the Rock Lodge. Along the way, we will make several stops to look for species we may have missed earlier, including the Yellow-rumped Antwren, Olive Finch, Peruvian Piedtail, Amazonian Umbrellabird, and Lanceolated Monklet. Upon arrival at Cock of the Rock Lodge, we will have dinner and settle in for the night.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we’ll explore the trails at Cock of the Rock Lodge to observe birds such as the Cerulean-capped Manakin, Yungas Manakin, Brown Tinamou, and Slaty Gnateater, among other species. Afterward, we’ll begin our return trip to Cusco. Along the way, we’ll make a few stops to continue birdwatching for species such as the Hazel-fronted Pygmy Tyrant, Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, and Band-tailed Fruiteater. We’ll have a boxed lunch for the trip and arrive in Cusco between approximately 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.
