Day by day
A 4-day, 3-night program from Cusco visiting Bambu Lodge, Machuwasi, Dorado Lodge and clay-lick activities.
We’ll begin our adventure with a pickup from your hotel at 5:00 a.m. in our tour bus. During the trip, we’ll pass through beautiful inter-Andean valleys and Andean communities that have preserved their traditions and customs. Our first stop will be the pre-Inca archaeological site of Ninamarca, known for its ancient funerary chullpas. Next, we’ll continue on to Paucartambo, a picturesque town with colonial architecture and recognized as the folkloric capital of Cusco, where we’ll visit its fascinating museum to learn more about local history and traditions. Afterward, we’ll head to the Acjanaco Pass, the gateway to Manu National Park, from where we’ll begin our descent into the cloud forest. During the tour, we’ll enjoy lunch surrounded by natural landscapes and lush vegetation. This region is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and the presence of iconic species such as the cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola sp.), Peru’s national bird. We’ll visit an observation deck to try to spot this fascinating species in its natural habitat. We’ll also be able to observe orchids, bromeliads, and tree ferns, as well as possibly encounter groups of choro monkeys (Lagothrix sp.). At the end of the tour, we’ll arrive at our lodging in the cloud forest, where we’ll enjoy the tranquility of nature and spend our first night of adventure.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we’ll depart by minibus for the port of Atalaya. During the trip, we’ll visit a hummingbird garden, where we’ll have the opportunity to observe these fascinating birds up close and take photos of their vibrant colors. Upon arriving at the port of Atalaya, we’ll board our boat to cruise along the Upper Madre de Dios River, surrounded by beautiful Amazonian landscapes. During the journey, we’ll be able to spot various bird species, such as herons, flycatchers, swallows, and neotropical cormorants. After about 40 minutes on the water, we’ll begin a hike to Machuwuasi Lagoon, where we’ll explore the area on wooden rafts. This ecosystem is ideal for birdwatching, including the hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), known for its primitive characteristics, and the camungo (Anhima cornuta), a striking bird with a powerful call. We’ll also visit a small observation tower to get a better view of the wildlife and landscapes surrounding the lagoon. At the end of the tour, we’ll enjoy lunch and continue on to Dorado Lodge in a 4x4 SUV. Along the way, we’ll take in the breathtaking landscapes of the rainforest and enjoy the warm Amazonian climate. In the afternoon, we’ll take a guided hike along the lodge’s trails to discover the natural wealth of the Amazon, with the chance to spot birds, caimans, and various medicinal plants. At the end of the day, we’ll return to our lodging to rest and enjoy the tranquility of the jungle.
Very early in the morning after our delicious breakfast we will start with the reforestation programme in the area of the forest designated, and this is the one that will define the specie of seed plant that we are going to plant in; we will choose the seed plant per participant (Tall forest: Aguano/Tornillo (Cedrelinga sp.) or Pacae (Inga sp.), forest close to swamp/wetland or along water course: Aguaje (Mauritia sp.) using tools like pickaxe, shovel and machete we will walk until the site where we will do the gps location data for every point for the seed plant planted, we will take pictures during the process and the marking of the seed plant in the “tutor”. Later and after recovering our energies with our snacks we are continuing our visit along the trails to try to see more colorful birds like the Blue and Yellow macaws (Ara ararauna), Scarlet macaws (Ara macao) or Red and Green macaws (Ara chloropterus) and wit luck a troop of Brown Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) to get back to the lodge to enjoy our lunch. After a rest we can go for a swimming in the river and also we can do fishing with local traditional technique and luckily we can catch some of the fish too; crossing fingers. After enjoying our dinner we can go for a hike to visit the platform of observation in front of the collpa/mammals claylick where we can wait, crossing fingers, for the largest mammal from the Amazonia the Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) to come to lick.
Very early in the morning and after a quit hot drink we will star our hike to visit the blind where is the observation point in front of the Collpa/Parrots Claylick to wait, luckily, for the birds to arrive to lick here, species like the very rare Blue Headed macaw (Primolius couloni), Chestnut fronted macaw (Ara severus) Auroras (Amazona sp.), Blue headed parrot (Pionus sp.), and after the visit/activity we will walk back to the lodge to enjoy our breakfast; sadly this is the time to start our trip back to Cusco first by our land transportation by pick up 4x4 until the location of Villa Salvación and form here on our private minibus until Cusco city along the road in the Cloud Forest and to enjoy our box lunch. During our way back and according of the weather situation we can walk along the road in the Cloud Forest with the chance to see some more wildlife activity here. Estimating arriving back to Cusco city is about 5pm aprox. **NOTE: We are offering vegans, vegetarians and also dietary restrictions for all our tours. The order of the activities included on this tour could be changed according on the weather conditions. The weather in the Amazonia is unpredictable, especially during the rainy season (November-January), and the weather conditions could affect the programme because the wildlife will be affected too because the rains.
